our teacher, mrs. doolan, made everyone in our class write a poem. since we had just gotten back from new york city on fall break, i wrote mine about new york. our poems were entered into a local poetry contest. my poem won honorable mention in the local competition, and i went to the ossoli circle club house to read my poem, along with 16 other students from local public and private schools. they announced that day the winners of the district competition (which includes all of east tennessee), and my poem won 1st place in the 4th through 6th grade category!
there were three of us from the local competition who also won at the district, and we were all from sequoyah elementary. aubrey davis won honorable mention at the district and gracie whitt won 2nd place in the 1st through 3rd grade category. they're in the picture with me above.
just last week we found out that my poem, which went on to the state competition, won 3rd place in the state for the 4th through 6th grade category! my mom and dad are so proud of me. here's a copy of my poem below:
there's no place on earth like new york city
the lights on times square are so bright and pretty!
there are dozens of shows to see on broadway
or lots of other ways to spend a day.
you can take a cab or a subway or even a bus
to the world's most amazing toys r us.
it has giant buildings made of legos and a candy land inside,
and a four story ferris wheel you can actually ride.
you can spend a day learning at the museum of natural history,
or you can see the empire state building and statue of liberty.
both of those buildings are unbelievably tall.
there are so many choices it would take a month to do it all!
